Considering Ava was my first baby I have had no idea what ages they are supposed to transition into big girl beds or drop bottles or learn to talk – I have googled almost everything!
We had an inkling that perhaps Ava was getting a little too big for cot converted to small bed before we left for the U.S. last year- we would find her half hanging out of the bed some mornings. She was also getting into the habit of coming into our bed a lot earlier than her normal 5/6am. We didn’t think to change her over to a single bed beforehand though as we weren’t sure if she was big enough- was it normal for a 2 year old to need a single bed already? She is so little…
When we got back after our trip we put her to bed as per usual but was woken up at about 11pm to her crying inconsolably- she had fallen out of the bed! The same thing happened the next night- Greg and I looked at each other and new it was time to transition her to a big girl bed!
I had been scouring Facebook Marketplace while we were overseas waiting for a white metal frame bed to appear at a bit cheaper than Ikea’s price of $200- and so on Monday morning a bed came up and I pounced! Come to find out the bed was for sale from a little girl (this was her old bed) because she wanted to buy an ipad! I felt so bad that I was buying her old bed for such a discounted price.. haha.. When she found out that the bed was going to be Ava’s first bed she included some of her old favourite books for Ava- it was the sweetest thing!
We set her up in her big girl bed a few months ago and she has been loving it!
Our little girl is not so little anymore!

I knew I wanted to move Ava’s room around to make it a bit more of a toddler girls room not a nursery. I also didn’t want to purchase anything additional because the room is quite small.
One main change we could make was that the chest of draws had the change mat on top which was the focus of the room up until recently- we tend to change her standing on the floor now (she is way too heavy to lift anymore!)
With a little re-shuffling I think we’ve managed to change this room into a great toddler room! Sources for mostly everything below!

I was explaining to a girlfriend this afternoon that I am itching to do a DIY/Home project. I know our bathroom renovation is off the list for a while (tears were shed writing that sentence) and I’m pretty happy with Ava’s bedroom and playroom.. so.. the next item on the list is our bedroom. I am so embarrassed to even show you a picture as it is so plain. I have nothing on the walls except a cardboard deer head and our bed is so large we actually have floating bedside tables (we have a king sized bed in a room suitable for a queen). Oh, and one of those bedside tables was broken a few months ago so it’s currently propped up by books and an empty plant stand… yes.. it’s as ridiculous as it sounds. Funny side story- If I record any insta stories in our room I have to purposely make sure I never film near our door so the public never sees my broken side table.. haha.. My dad is a carpenter and we have literally put up with this broken side table for MONTHS.. like more months than I can remember so that’s super awkward and sad..
Anyways.. considering we feel insanely blessed to even have a home I put together an inspiration board that isn’t going to cost a fortune. I’m talking artificial plants and a floating shelf. I kind of love the idea!
Floating Shelf- 1 & 2 | Drooping Plants- 1 & 2 | Blue Walls- 1 & 2
I felt like I needed to do a roundup of artificial plants as well as there is no way I am putting real plants in our room- bugs, having to replace them every month.. it’s not happening. All of the below are less than $30 each. Some are as cheap as $4.95!

Because we created a playroom for Ava we were able to re-arrange her bedroom and create more room! By removing a large white sofa bed we had in her room (It’s surprising the amount of room it took up) we could finally put a little tent which she loves! Sources linked below!

After thinking about it for a few weeks we finally took the plunge in turning our guest room into a playroom for Ava! The couch that’s in the playroom is a double bed so we can still have guests etc.
The room is not completely finished but It’s good enough for now! Ava loves it!
If you don’t want to spend a lot of money I recommend searching through your local sites like Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace. I had a lot of the items for the playroom already, but what I did purchase I bought from FB Marketplace or Gumtree for a fraction of the price!
I’ve listed most of the sources or similar items.
Dot Wall Adhesives (100 percent heart). These are the wall dots I used in Ava’s room as well.
Animal Plush Heads (Myer). Similar ones listed here from Target U.S.
Honeycomb and Tassel

White Frame for print (on wall)
Rocking Horse. I bought Ava’s one from Gumtree for $15. Similar one linked here.

Now that we are rounding the corner on sickness in our home I’m slowly transitioning out of survival mode.. It’s one thing when mum is sick.. I generally keep going on with life and work.. but when you’re little one is sick you want to wrap them up in bubble wrap and rock them to bed.. while simultaneously wanting to throw them out the window.. well.. not really.. but you get the idea..
Miss Ava came down (for the first time) with the cold sore virus.. eek.. I know.. It runs in our family.. like W.H.O.L.E Family.. so it was inevitable, but it was so terrible. Apparently (from what I read on Dr. Google) the first time they get the virus it’s really bad.. and trust me.. it was really bad. She didn’t want to eat.. her throat was sore.. she had canker sores in her mouth on top of cold sores.. we’re still coming out of the whole event but it’s a lot better compared to what it was!
Side note here.. Ava normally has a dummy (pacifier) when she goes to bed- so nap times and night time, however we sometimes end up using it to keep her quiet during church or lunch.. I recently found out Greg gives her the dummy in the car on the way to drop her to my mum.. Insert double frowning face here..
Anyways.. I had an ah hah moment last week that the dummy was probably not helping the cold sores get better as it was constantly rubbing up against them..so while in the car one drive I took Ava’s dummy and told her that her Na-Na (Dummy) was going Bye-bye.. and that she needs to wave Bye-Bye to her Na-Na.. well she waved bye-bye and then didn’t asking me for it again.. she probably has asked us for it twice in the last 4 days.. I don’t know if I’m dreaming or if my child is a genius.. whatever it is we are off the na-na!! What the?! Yeah.. call me the baby genius or something.. let’s see if we can get her to read by the time she’s one and a half! My advice is- if your child is old enough to understand the concept of something or someone going goodbye or bye-bye then they are ready to understand the concept of something being taken from them.
Anyways.. back on to recovery mode.. now that Miss Ava is feeling a lot better I am starting to notice that her normal toys are not cutting it for her. We used to carry toys around in the bottom of the pram but these are the same toys she played with when she was 6 months old.. I know.. we’re bad parents..
I created a little alphabet book for her (not that it’s working)- every animal in the book is a dodo (dog).. Lord help us.. soooooo..I’ve been toying with the idea of a playroom.. We have a three bedroom home so if we did create a playroom we would lose this spare bedroom.. OR.. we could move a pull out lounge that we have into the playroom for guests to use when they are over… I would love everyone’s thoughts and suggestions! I’ve highlighted some of my favourite playrooms that I’ve seen around the web! There are some really great ideas for functional yet fun rooms! Designing anything for Miss Ava sends me into a pinning frenzy…!!

Ava is at the age where a piece of toast will occupy her long enough for me to eat breakfast.. at dinner time, a cut up banana or piece of chicken will hold her attention for at least 5 minutes as she tries to self feed herself.. it is amazing.. While I love my child, I have forgotten what it is like to eat dinner and only worry about myself. My entire family, who watch Ava during the week all laugh when we swap stories from the week gone by and notice a reoccuring theme of eating breakfast at 10:30am after she has gone down for her nap.. or eating lunch at 2:15pm because if she sees you eating she’ll want some of your food (even if she has eaten her lunch, a snack and had a bottle).. I love that she loves food.. but have you ever tried eating a meal with a pair of eyes staring at you willing you to give them a piece of whatever you’re eating? It doesn’t matter if it’s broccoli or a donut.. she wants it.. and she wants it bad!
At this stage of Ava’s life her- bread or cut up pieces of chicken, is to mum’s of 2-4 years olds what these giant colouring sheets are! If you remember, back last week, I spoke about a friend of mine who had a massive chalkboard wall- I can imagine the lengths of entertainment her kids find drawing and creating on this wall.. well.. if you don’t have a spare wall at the moment, or you’re renting and don’t think your landlord would approve of an entire chalkboard wall- we have a solution!

You can get these large colouring sheets printed at your local print store- for us here in Australia that would be Officeworks. If you are printing black and white they are only $2-$4 a sheet which is fantastic!
I custom designed an A0 sized colouring sheet for Ava! If you would like a custom file download colouring sheet for your children, send me an email!
Or there is another very cheap alternative that looks great- mounting a roll of kraft paper onto the wall!

For the nursery we decided to get rid of our study/2nd guest room. It wasn’t a very hard decision as we hardly ever used the room- however we did decide to keep the large double bed futon in there- in helps when we have guests and they have kids. The only problem that caused though was that we didn’t have much room to work with (which I guess is okay when your baby is super small)- check back with us once she turns 2 or 3!
Below are most of the exact items we purchased (with a few similar products for those that have been discontinued). I went with mainly neutral items (that we already had) and soft touches of pink and coral (I’m not a hot pink kind of gal).
The nursery is one of the most beautiful rooms in our home- we can’t wait to fill it with a little baby!!
While I know it’s not 100% finished, I wanted to give a little peak into this special room..
