Dollhouse DIY

So dollhouses- while I am seriously impressed with the Barbie dollhouse out there today (I’m talking about built in lifts and water sprinklers) they are a horrible bright pink and plastic. I don’t know why but plastic dollhouses just aren’t my thing- they look cheap and cheery- I much prefer a wood dollhouse!

Dollhouses weren’t really on my radar for Ava considering her age and the fact that she had never really showed an interest in them- that was until we were in the States last year. My In-laws had a huge Barbie dollhouse with a farm, car etc you name it they had it! Ava was in love!

If you remember a few years ago- I bought a Big W Kids Garment Rack. It’s still available for purchase for $39.

Well with Ava getting a little bigger and re-arranging her room to try and give her more space it just wasn’t feasible to have the garment rack in her room. I didn’t want to get rid of it because apparently it’s a coveted Big W item (ha) and it’s super cute (the reason I bought it in the first place). I moved it to the playroom initially but again it was taking up too much room.  I thought of using it as a superhero/princess changing station with costumes etc but again the room and I couldn’t handle mismatched colourful outfits being out on display (that my friends is the real reason I’m sure.. my OCD wouldn’t allow it)

After a few days of musing over what to do the thought of changing it into a dollhouse came to mind! We wanted to get Ava a dollhouse anyways and with some woodwork from my dad I could probably get the bare bones of a dollhouse to paint and decorate!

I dropped the dollhouse into dad one day and within a few weeks I had the bare bones of a dollhouse! Big W eat your heart out!

After some paint, dollhouse furniture from Amazon/Kmart and inspiration from Pinterest we’ve partially finished creating a beautiful doll house! I’ll link everything below! I still have a little ways to go regarding decorating walls etc but we’re well on our way!

Ava loves playing with it and we’ve named her two dolls Ava and Sophia and the baby’s name is “baby.” The girls have baths and eat dinner, they cook and play in the babies room- it’s quite adorable to watch!

Floors- the “floor boarded” floors are cut up paddle pop sticks, glued down with a hot glue gun.

Wallpaper- Scrap booking paper from our local craft store hot glue gunned to the walls.

I’m still working on ideas for the walls- i.e. framed pictures, macrame etc send me your ideas if you have any!

img_8342Considering Ava was my first baby I have had no idea what ages they are supposed to transition into big girl beds or drop bottles or learn to talk – I have googled almost everything!

We had an inkling that perhaps Ava was getting a little too big for cot converted to small bed before we left for the U.S. last year- we would find her half hanging out of the bed some mornings. She was also getting into the habit of coming into our bed a lot earlier than her normal 5/6am. We didn’t think to change her over to a single bed beforehand though as we weren’t sure if she was big enough- was it normal for a 2 year old to need a single bed already? She is so little…

When we got back after our trip we put her to bed as per usual but was woken up at about 11pm to her crying inconsolably- she had fallen out of the bed! The same thing happened the next night- Greg and I looked at each other and new it was time to transition her to a big girl bed!

I had been scouring Facebook Marketplace while we were overseas waiting for a white metal frame bed to appear at a bit cheaper than Ikea’s price of $200- and so on Monday morning a bed came up and I pounced! Come to find out the bed was for sale from a little girl (this was her old bed) because she wanted to buy an ipad! I felt so bad that I was buying her old bed for such a discounted price.. haha.. When she found out that the bed was going to be Ava’s first bed she included some of her old favourite books for Ava- it was the sweetest thing!

We set her up in her big girl bed a few months ago and she has been loving it!

Our little girl is not so little anymore!

Kids Decor Pillows

For a number of years I have pinned and saved pictures of pillow DIY’s- from mountains to houses, numbers, letters- you name it. There’s something about an over sized piece of fruit or number that yells “I am fun!! Your baby will love me!” There are so many companies out there that make absolutely adorable decorative pillows for kids- I’ve linked some of my favourite below. I’ve also found a few tutorials that will help you make your own! This DIY is definitely being added to my “to do” list for Ava’s room and playroom!

Toddler Girls Bedroom

636641579804348075_Afterlight_EditI knew I wanted to move Ava’s room around to make it a bit more of a toddler girls room not a nursery. I also didn’t want to purchase anything additional because the room is quite small.

One main change we could make was that the chest of draws had the change mat on top which was the focus of the room up until recently- we tend to change her standing on the floor now (she is way too heavy to lift anymore!)

With a little re-shuffling I think we’ve managed to change this room into a great toddler room! Sources for mostly everything below!

Kids Bedroom Inspiration

It is not secret that I love looking at kids bedroom ideas. There is something extremely fun and exciting about designing a space for a little one to explore every day- at least I’ve found it to be so! A bedroom needs to have the necessity of storage and a bed but then everything else is totally left up to the designer! I am by no means an interior decorator but my heart skipped a beat when I saw the final layout of the rooms (especially the little girls’ room.. I know.. I’m partial)! You guys, I am dying over that little girls bed- like literally swooning.

As Ava gets older I will definitely start looking into transitioning her into a big girl bed- as practical as bunk beds or trundel beds are I cannot ignore these little house beds that are EVERYWHERE at the moment.. Should I throw caution to the wind? I would love to hear your feedback as to when you moved your kids to big beds and how you went about changing their rooms up.

Kids Bedroom Update

Because we created a playroom for Ava we were able to re-arrange her bedroom and create more room! By removing a large white sofa bed we had in her room (It’s surprising the amount of room it took up) we could finally put a little tent which she loves! Sources linked below!

A flare for the dramatic..

A few months ago I wrote a post about Ava’s nursery- we decided to go with pastel’s and whites.

dsc_00531

dsc_00541If you have seen our house you will notice that I definitely like whites and neutral colours. Our lounge-room and dining area are very Scandinavian- grey couches, timber and white dining set, white walls etc. Everyone has warned me that keeping our walls white is going to be a challenge when Ava gets bigger!!

While I love neutrals, I’ve recently come across a few nursery’s that are dramatic to say the least! I have to admit they are incredible even though they are totally opposite my normal style!

Below are some of my favourite’s I’ve found- maybe for our next baby I will be become a bit more adventurous with the nursery!!
